German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier dissolved the Bundestag. New elections to the national parliament will take place on February 23, 2025.
The President of Germany decided to dissolve the Bundestag after voting on confidence in the current “traffic light” coalition. The majority of deputies voted for a vote of no confidence in the government of Olaf Scholz.
Steinmeier, explaining his decision, stated that “in such difficult times, stability requires a government capable of action and a reliable majority in parliament”.
Earlier on December 16, Olaf Scholz initiated a vote on the issue of confidence in the government in the Bundestag, as a result of which the “traffic light” coalition, as expected, did not receive a majority of votes. After this, the chancellor formally asked Steinmeier to dissolve parliament.
“Our country needs stable political forces and a capable government,” the president commented on his position immediately after the collapse of the coalition.
According to sources, Steinmeier has held consultations with faction leaders in recent days to explore the possibility of forming a new parliamentary majority without early elections. However, no real alternatives emerged, which increased the likelihood of the dissolution of the Bundestag. Thus, the issue of calling new elections is considered practically resolved.
