Deputy Mayor of Halandri Haris Mavroudis described unmotivated assault by a police officerto which he and the actor who played were subjected “Saint Nicholas”.“He scolded us with rude words”– noted the deputy mayor, then hit “Saint Nicholas” and finally showed him the Nazi “Ziga”.
Speaking on ERT on Thursday, December 26, Deputy Mayor Halandri stressed that he managed to avoid being hit and added that the policeman gave a Nazi salute. “It added a little different dimension to everything that happened.”noted Mavroudis.
“Before this, I thought this was violent and absurd human behavior. But he gave a Nazi salute when he came a second time to try to hit us. And this made it clear that he was not just a mentally ill person – there was some kind of political background behind this.”“, he emphasized, speaking about the policeman who will appear before the prosecutor today.
“He was supposed to be on duty until 3 p.m. and he should have been in his office. The incident occurred around 2:30 p.m. He came of his own free will, as he stated, to Halandri Square for personal reasons, on his official motorcycle. He entered the square where the celebration was taking place.
He was reprimanded by those responsible for the site, very politely and without any extremes. All this happened in front of the children and parents. I happened to be passing by and saw a man intimidating a woman. I did what probably anyone in our position would have done.”
“This man's physical posture looked as if he was ready to headbutt her. I told him that if he didn't leave, I would call the police. Using his official position and using the most rude words, he said that the police would not do anything to him , and that he was from Halandri’s security team. He didn’t know who I was,” explained the deputy mayor.
“When I heard this, I said I would call the head of security. He got off the motorcycle. He tried to attack me and “Saint Nicholas” by hitting and kicking. I avoided the blow, it grazed me a little in the face, but it was not serious. “St. Nicholas” suffered more. When I asked for the motorcycle details to know who he was, he took the motorcycle and drove off. After 100 meters he returned and tried to hit us again. People started to gather, and in fear of publicity, he made this Nazi gesture and left,” said Deputy Mayor Chalandri.
“A police officer who tries to use his official position has no right to a place in the police force. You cannot intimidate or threaten. Because there were threats that we would be burned, that we would be beaten, and various rudenesses, and he believed that he could avoid any consequences for his actions just because he was a policeman.”he concluded.
The policeman who hit “St. Nicholas” was brought to the prosecutor
It is reported that the 35-year-old policeman is due to be brought before the prosecutor today, Thursday (December 26).
As it became known, the policeman was on duty and of his own free will came on a service motorcycle to Halandri Square (while out of uniform) opposite the Church of St. Nicholas for personal reasons.
The site was hosting celebrations for the municipality of Halandri and vehicles were prohibited, but a policeman drove into the area on his motorcycle.
When the woman reprimanded him, he burst into anger and attacked “St. Nicholas” and the deputy mayor.
