According to a special emergency bulletin from EMY, the weather for Christmas will not please us – rain and thunderstorms are expected on the islands, gusty winds, and snowfall in the mountains.
All these phenomena, according to the warning of meteorologists, will persist until the end of the week. For Christmas, December 25heavy rain and predominantly coastal thunderstorms in the Sporades, central and northern Evia, the Dodecanese, the southernmost areas of the Eastern Aegean (Samos – Ikaria region) and from the afternoon in eastern Thessaly (Magnesia), eastern Sterea, southern Evia and in the western Cyclades.
On the second day of Christmas, December 26, heavy rains are expected in eastern Thessaly (Magnesia), the Sporades, Evia, eastern Sterea (mainly Phthiotis – Boeotia), the Cyclades (mainly western and northern), from midday in Attica and eastern Peloponnese.
Gusty northeast winds with force 7-8 on the Beaufort scale from the afternoon of December 25 are forecast in Thrace, the north-eastern Aegean Sea and the Sporades. From the morning of the second day of Christmas in these areas, as well as in Evia and the southern regions of Chalkidiki, the wind will increase to 8-9 points.
On holidays, December 25 and 26snow will fall in the mountains of the mainland, Evia and Crete. It is also expected in semi-mountainous areas of central and northern Greece. Heavy snowfall is forecast from the second half of Wednesday into Thursday in the mountains of eastern Macedonia and Thrace.
On Friday 27 December Precipitation in the form of rain and snow will decrease in most areas. However, windy weather will remain in the Aegean Sea and in some places in the east of the mainland.
Today, the country's mountains are dressed in “white”, bringing joy to children and adults in rural areas who head outside to enjoy the snow on Christmas morning. Snowfall occurred in Ioannina, Grevena, Florina and Metsovo, as well as in Neraidochori Trikala. Residents of Crete and Evia also saw snow; all ski resorts in the country were “dressed in white.” So far there have been no reports of problems, but authorities are urging drivers to use snow chains.
