Intervention of the prosecutor regarding the accident with the Moutzouris train in Pelion


Derailment of the Moutzouris train – the legendary train to Pelion — led to the intervention of the Volos prosecutor's office, which ordered a preliminary investigation.

Legendary train Moutzouris was created by the famous engineer Ernesto de Chirico, father of the artist Giorgio de Chirico, in 1892. Today this train is one of the attractions of Greece, which attracts many tourists.

The action under study is considered dangerous interference with the movement of funds on the railwaywhat created risk to people due to negligence.

The collection of information about the incident related to the derailment of the Mutzouri train, which occurred on Saturday, December 14, 2024, the opening day of the winter schedule, was undertaken by South Pelion Police Department. Fortunately, no one was injured as a result of the incident.

As part of the preliminary investigation, they will be called to interrogation of 37 passengerswho were on the train at that moment in order to find out the conditions under which the derailment occurred. All documents will also be collected, from which it will become clear what measures have been taken to ensure the safety of the route, according to information from magnesenews.

It will also examine what actions should have been taken or omitted to avoid this incident.

We would like to remind you that one of the carriages of the Moutzouris train, operating on the route Lechonia – Milia – Lechonia in the villages of Pelion, derailed, causing the train to stop.

The problem was caused by a stone in the way. According to a statement released Hellenic Train, “There were 8 passengers in the first carriage who were immediately and safely transferred with the help of Hellenic Train staff to the rear carriages of the train, which was carrying a total of 37 passengers, and no one was injured.”

Moutzouris travels along the narrowest railway line in the world – only 60 centimeters wide. The train route runs along Mount Pelion and is therefore very picturesque. In winter the train consists of two cars, in summer – of four.

On the way from Volos to Milis, the train makes only one stop – in Ano Lekonia. The total length of the route is 15 kilometers, travel time is 90 minutes.
