A Russian tanker broke in half and is sinking near the Kerch Strait. Four tons of fuel oil contained in it spilled into the sea.

On the morning of December 15, it became known that two tankers were sinking at once: Volgoneft 212 and Volgoneft-239. Both were broken in half by the waves, and fuel oil began to flow into the water.

There were 13 crew members on the Volgoneft 212, and there were about 4,300 tons of fuel oil on board the tanker. Later it became known that another one sank after it – Volgoneft-239, whose hull also broke into two parts after being hit by a wave.

Four thousand tons of fuel oil leaked from Volganeft-212 tanks. A huge black spot has formed in the sea. Rescuers on tugboats are trying to pull the sailors out of the water.

The Russian Ministry of Emergency Situations officially confirmed that Volgoneft-212 and Volgoneft-239 were sinking. An MI-8 helicopter flew to the scene. There are 13 people and fuel oil on board the Volgoneft-212, and 14 people and oil products on the Volgoneft-239.

The tugboat “Mercury” came out from Kerch to help the crew and the Mi-8 of the Russian Ministry of Emergency Situations took off with rescuers. “More than 50 specialists and 11 pieces of equipment have already been involved in eliminating the consequences. Further information is being clarified,” the Ministry of Emergency Situations reports.
