Bloomberg news agency said it was aware of how Moscow evacuated Assad from Syria. Previously the same agency buried former Syrian leader, saying he was on the plane that was shot down near Damascus.
Bloomberg cites sources in the Kremlin who said that Russian intelligence services coordinated his escape. The ousted president first left Damascus on a private jet, but, according to the British Telegraph, he did not inform any of his advisers about this, fearing betrayal scenario.
He then turned off his plane's transponder, after which the aircraft headed to the Russian Khmeimim airbase on the Syrian coast. From there he flew on a Russian military plane to Moscow.
Bashar al-Assad, in consultation with Russian security services, took off early Sunday morning (08/12) from Damascus, turning off the radar of his private plane. At this time, Fligthradar24 data showed a plane believed to be carrying Assad. The plane headed towards the Mediterranean Sea before turning around and disappearing from radarwhich sparked rumors of a possible disaster.
Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov told NBC News that Assad was taken out of Syria over the weekend “in the safest way” “He is safe, and this shows that Russia is acting as required in such a critical situation,” – added the Russian Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs.
