A tiger killed a cleaner at a Romanian zoo: details of the tragedy

IN Romania A tiger at the zoo killed a cage cleaner. Zoo employee Pitesti was mauled to death by a tiger, which bit him several times on the head.

The incident occurred on Monday morning at the zoo, located approximately 97 kilometers from Bucharest. The prosecutor's office and the police began an investigation.

The caretaker was reported to have violated safety regulations. He entered the cage without taking the tiger to a safe room. A spokesman for the Pitesti City Hall explained: “The man responsible for cleaning the area entered the tiger’s cage without following safety rules. According to the rules, before cleaning, the tiger had to be taken out of the fenced area into the yard and the cage had to be closed with a security door. However, the employee did not do this; he forgot to close the door. The tiger returned to the cage and bit him on the head.”.

Rescuers were called immediately, but could only ascertain the man’s death. Mayor of the city Christian Gentea stated: “A zoo employee died after being attacked by a tiger. This is the first such case in the last 50 years.”.

“This is a great loss, and our thoughts are with the family of the deceased and all loved ones in these difficult moments. According to preliminary information, the tragedy occurred due to the fact that the employee did not follow the prescribed safety rules when working with wild animals.”said the mayor.

There have been several tiger incidents in Romanian zoos, including Pitesti, over the past decades. In 2000, a tiger escaped from the Pitesti Zoo because a staff member forgot to close several doors. Fortunately, the animal was found less than an hour later in the forest near the zoo and returned to its cage.

Zoo officials said safety measures will be overhauled over the coming weeks to avoid similar tragedies in the future.
