Be careful: severe storms in Attica (video)

Residents of Attica should be careful in the next two hours – on the morning of Friday, December 6, a strong storm hit the region and 20-30 mm of rain has already fallen.

There is a traffic collapse on the roads of Attica. Several roads have turned into rivers due to heavy rains, making it difficult for citizens to travel.

The new bad weather caused problems: due to the accumulation of water, traffic was stopped on the avenue Mesogeon at the Katehaca level in both traffic streams. Problems also arose on Karamanli Avenue in Menidi, where one lane of traffic was blocked. Amid intense thunderstorm activity, rainfall levels in Hymettos reached 65 millimeters in just a few hours, and in the Ampelokipi area – 50 millimeters. The fire department received the first calls asking them to pump out water from different areas. According to meteorologists, the next two hours are expected to be critical.

“The day started with a lot of water in the Attica prefecture, where we also recorded floodsa lot of water fell on the eastern and southern Peloponnese, as well as on western and southern Crete. In the Aegean Sea, attention is needed to the Cyclades, the islands of the eastern and south-eastern Aegean, including Rhodes,” notes meteorologist Clearchos Marousakis in a Facebook post.

In an updated forecast at 05:50, EMY head Thodoris Kolidas talks about gradual weakening of storms in Attica with movement to the north-northwest and emphasizes:

“However, attention is required over the next two hours as local velocities are high. Rainfall totals in the urban environment are currently reaching 20-30mm.”

Temperatures will rise slightly and reach 14–15°C in the northern continental areas, 18–19°C in the remaining continental areas and the Ionian Sea, 20–21°C locally in the Cyclades, Crete and Dodecanese.

Weather in Attica today: Temporary increase in cloud cover with localized showers and possibly isolated storms during the morning hours along coastal areas. Gradual improvement in the evening hours. Wind easterly from 3 to 4 on the Beaufort scale, gradually changing with the same intensity.
