Russian President Vladimir Putin has threatened to strike the capital of Ukraine with a new ballistic missile.
He stated this in a conversation with media representatives after the summit of the Collective Security Treaty Organization in Astana, Kazakhstan on Thursday, November 28.
How they tell Euronews and AP, The Russian President claims that launching several Oreshnik missiles in one attack would have a destructive force comparable to a nuclear strike. At a press conference in Kazakhstan, he praised US President-elect Donald Trump, calling him an intelligent and experienced politician, and threatened to strike Kyiv with Oreshnik missiles:
“We do not exclude the use of Oreshnik at military facilities, military industry facilities or decision-making centers.”
The Oreshnik missile, first launched into Ukraine last week, carries six warheads and can travel at 10 times the speed of sound, Putin said. He also stated that it could not be intercepted by any modern air defense systems.and that the use of several Oreshnik missiles simultaneously would be comparable in destructive power to a nuclear strike, although the Oreshnik is not a weapon of mass destruction.
At the summit of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) in Kazakhstan Putin said that Oreshnik can penetrate underground bunkers and release dozens of submunitions. According to him, the temperature of the damaging elements reaches 4,000 degrees, and everything that is at the epicenter of the explosion “essentially turns to dust.” The President of the Russian Federation also announced that Russia has begun mass production of Oreshnik“.
The Russian president suggested that the US decision to allow Ukraine to strike Russia with longer-range missiles could be aimed at making it more difficult for the next US administration to negotiate a peace deal. Regarding the new US president, Putin expressed confidence that “he will be able to find a solution, given that he has solved such a problem as returning to the White House.”
Meanwhile, analysts from the Institute for the Study of War report in their report that there is nothing new in the capabilities of the Oreshnik missile, and its use will not lead to further escalation in the war. IN the report notesthat the Russian president's efforts to publicize the missile's technical characteristics are part of a broader information campaign. ISW believes that focusing on a missile's range and payload, comparing its destructive capabilities to those of a meteor, designed to intimidate Ukraine and the Westand distract Kyiv from further attacks on Russian territory by Western systems.
