The Economist assessed the losses of two countries, Ukraine and the Russian Federation, for the period since the beginning of a full-scale war.
The publication calculated that Ukraine lost 60-100 thousand of its citizens killed. Another 400 thousand people cannot continue to serve in the army due to injuries. The Economist writes about this on November 27, citing several sources: Western intelligence data, statements by US administration officials and information from open sources. The material says:
“These reports are difficult to independently verify. And missing and presumed dead soldiers are not always included in these data. However, they provide a rough idea of the number of dead.”
The Economist estimates the number of civilian casualties in the “tens of thousands”noting that there is even less information about civilian deaths than about military personnel.
As for Russia's losses in the war, according to The Economist, published in July 2024, as of June 21, between 106 and 140 thousand Russian soldiers were killed. The publication points out that data on Ukrainian losses is more difficult to collect, since the allies are “reluctant to provide estimates.”
Journalists note that The battle death toll on both sides approaches that of the United States in World War II, and Russia's losses are higher than those it has suffered in all armed conflicts since 1945 combined.
According to calculations by the American newspaper The Wall Street Journal, the number of killed and wounded Ukrainians and Russians during the entire period of the full-scale war between Russia and Ukraine reached approximately 1 million. During hostilities 80 thousand Ukrainian troops and 200 thousand Russian soldiers were killedthe publication reported in September, relying on Ukrainian sources and information from Western intelligence services.
The authorities of Ukraine and Russia do not provide official data on losses, but journalists keep lists of the dead based on publicly available information. According to Mediazona and the BBC Russian Service, more than 70 thousand Russians died in the war. This list does not include all killed Russian servicemen, but only those whose deaths were publicly reported.
