Greece and international law: double standards in action

Greek government questioned international law refusing even theoretically to execute the arrest warrant issued by the International Criminal Court against B. Netanyahu.

Of course, Greece has been and remains a strategic ally of Israel, like most countries of the European Union, but this is unlikely to apply to the personality of the current prime minister. Government spokesman Pavlos Marinakis stated:

“We do not believe that such decisions help. Our policy is clear, our position is unambiguous: an immediate stop to fire is required“, he said.

“We do not hide our alliances”he added, noting that “we cannot equate a state that was attacked by the terrorist Hamas with other states that themselves initiated attacks,” referring to Russia and its military actions in Ukraine.

In other words, what the Greek government has said is that it accepts or does not accept the jurisdiction of the ICC, depending on who exactly becomes “target”. That is, it pursues a policy of “double standards” and then talks about international law.

He further noted that one cannot equate a country that actually suffered a terrible and wanton terrorist attack, i.e. Israel, with a country that, as a government spokesman pointed out, “attacked another state”meaning Russia.

Israel did have the right to self-defense, but there is a huge difference between that and killing 50,000 people, a third of whom were children.

As for Russia itself and its attack on Ukraine, no one from the government explained what exactly Moscow should have done to protect the Russian-speaking population, which was being massacred and persecuted by the Kyiv regime. With this position, the government will not be able to make any accusations against Turkey and the crimes it has committed in Cyprus.

It is worth noting that the arrest warrant for Netanyahu was accepted by all Western countries, even Great Britain, which is the “godmother” of the Israeli state. Thus we do not look like an organized state, but rather like something like a Western “banana republic”where elections are made according to the principle “whatever is convenient for us”.

PS November 26 – Prime Minister Michel Barnier confirmed that France will fulfill its obligations following the arrest warrant issued by the ICC against his Israeli counterpart Benjamin Netanyahu if he arrives in the country.

November 28 – The French Foreign Ministry said that Netanyahu has immunity from the International Criminal Court warrant.

Or maybe the problem is something else? For example, does Netanyahu have dirt on Mitsotakis? Which, given the scandal with the Israeli Predator program, is quite likely. Or is it the common business interests of the two leaders, hidden from the public. It is quite possible that it is both. After all, few people in Greece believe in the “cleanliness” of the current prime minister.
