Athens named "The world's leading cultural city" in 2024


Athens received this award for its rich cultural heritage and the unique experiences they offer to the millions of travelers visiting the Greek capital every year.

The Greek capital competed with 14 other cities for the 2024 award, including Edinburgh, London, New York, Paris, Rome, Dubrovnik, Venice, Rio de Janeiro, Beijing, Kyoto, Hoi An (Vietnam), Barranquilla (Colombia), Quito (Ecuador) and Santiago de Cali (Colombia). Winners are determined through a voting process among tourism and travel professionals as well as the general public.

“We are very proud of this award, which demonstrates that Athens is a powerful global cultural brand,” — the mayor of Athens commented on the news Haris Doukas. The mayor added that the municipality will continue to invest in strengthening culture through important activities and events “that bring residents and visitors closer to the rich cultural past and present of Athens.”

Accepted an award in Portugal Ioannis GeorgidasGeneral Director Athens Destination Development and Management Agency (ADDMA).

“This international award is the result of systematic work to promote the city. Through ADDMA, we are implementing actions aimed at highlighting the competitive advantages of Athens in international tourism markets. Our goal is to attract high quality tourism to strengthen the local economy,” – he said.

Established in 1993, the WTA recognizes excellence and exceptional service in the travel, tourism and hospitality industries, encouraging innovation and excellence among industry participants. Categories include airlines and airports, hotels and resorts, travel agencies and tour operators, travel advice and destinations (eg, leading tourist attractions, leading cultural destinations), cruise lines and car rental and transportation companies.
