Israel and Hezbollah reach peace agreement – Trump's first success

A senior US official told US news site Axios that Israel and Hezbollah had reached an agreement to end the war.

This event is undoubtedly the first victory for US President Donald Trump, who is the guarantor of the agreement, and shows how a lot will change while he is at the helm. The agreement will also allow hundreds of thousands of civilians on both sides of the border to gradually return to their homes, Axios reported.

The Israeli cabinet is expected to approve the agreement on Tuesdaysaid a US representative. An Israeli official confirmed that the cabinet would meet that day. “We believe we have an agreement. Four U.S. and Israeli officials told Axios on Sunday that the deal was nearly complete. The draft ceasefire includes a 60-day transition period during which the Israeli army will withdraw from southern Lebanon, the Lebanese army will deploy to areas adjacent to the border, and Hezbollah will move its heavy weapons north of the Litani River.

The agreement provides for the creation of a US-led monitoring committee that will monitor its implementation and eliminate violations. The US has agreed to provide Israel with a letter of assurance that includes support for Israeli military action against immediate threats from Lebanese territory and actions aimed at preventing such things as the re-establishment of a military presence Hezbollah near the border or the smuggling of heavy weapons, Israeli and US officials say.
