Unsightly picture of Lake Pamvotida

The project to clean up the lake bottom began with… “expected” finds. Divers recovered debris, chairs and metal tables from the bottom.

The footage of the lake being cleaned up is amazing. While working on Lake Pamvotida (Ioannina), divers led by the Organization for Environment and Climate Change (OFYPEKA) discovered piles of rubbish, including chairs and metal tables. It is noted that this project is being implemented by the Protected Areas Management Department of Epirus. The cleaning covers an area 3.5 kilometers long and 30 meters wide, from the Matsika location to the Sfageya location.

In a statement, OFYPEKA said the “images are not a new phenomenon, as in recent years a large volume of solid waste, such as plastic, aluminum, motorcycles, boats, tires, metal structures, has been recorded at the bottom of the lake, mainly near the city beach.” For this reason, there was an urgent need to carry out underwater cleaning of the lake. And the resulting images are depressing.
