Hundreds of dead birds were spotted on the Nafplio – Nea Kios coastal road in Argolis in the eastern Peloponnese at midday on Thursday 14 November.
According to local media, the dead birds were noticed by area residents who reported it to authorities.
Many of the birds were hit by passing cars, as there is quite heavy traffic on the coastal road. The dead birds are said to be starlings and samples will be sent to the Ornithological Society to determine the cause of their death.
Representatives of local authorities said they knew nothing about the mass death of birds. The competent services of the regional division of Argolida and environmental organizations were informed about the death of the birds and immediately went to the site, reports the local website argolikeseidisis.gr.
This area contains a wetland with rich flora and faunathanks to the river and streams that flow into the bay of Nea Kios. At this time, no other animal species native to the area have been affected.
