Greece is in talks with Israel to create an air defense system for 2 billion euros

Greece is in talks with Israel to develop an air and missile defense system similar to the Iron Dome, costing 2 billion euros ($2.11 billion).

It is part of a broader effort to modernize the country's armed forces as it emerges from a protracted debt crisis, Reuters reported, citing Greek officials.

The new system is expected to be similar Israeli “Iron Dome” and other systems that intercept short- and long-range missiles launched during attacks from neighbors amid ongoing conflicts in Gaza and Lebanon. Greece is seeking to invest in defense to keep up with Turkey, its NATO ally and historical rival, which is also developing its own air defense systems despite some improvements in relations.

“The plan is to create a multi-level air defense and anti-drone defense system.”one of the sources familiar with the situation told Reuters after a closed briefing with Greek Defense Minister Nikos Dendias. “We are negotiating with Israel”the source added. A second official confirmed the scale of the potential deal, adding that Greece needs to spend 12.8 billion euros until 2035 to modernize its armed forces.

The air defense systems are part of Athens' 10-year military procurement plan, which includes the acquisition of up to 40 new F-35 fighter jets and drones from the US, as well as four frigates Belharra and fighters Rafale from France.

“Our efforts are aimed at rapidly transforming our armed forces into the 21st century”Defense Minister Dendias said ahead of Thursday's briefing.

Greece currently uses systems Patriot from the USA and old Russian S-300 systems to protect their airspace. Despite some thawing in Greece's long-term tense relations with Turkey, its much larger eastern neighbor, the two countries remain at odds over a range of issues, including maritime borders, energy resources and airspace in the eastern Mediterranean.
