76 members of the central committee of the Progressive Alliance SYRIZA submitted a letter to party secretary Rania Swig on Tuesday resignation letterreferring to “undemocratic procedures” both at the recent party congress and in the party as a whole. 76 people also renounced party membership.
In a letter addressed to Svig, they stated, in particular: “Everything that happened before and during the SYRIZA-PA congress does not allow us to participate anymore in the work of the party and its bodies for political and ethical reasons. The facts of an artificial majority formed with the sole purpose of invalidating the election of President Stefanos Kasselakis, who was elected by the party base, and expelling him, as well as the authoritarian way of dealing with a conditional minority in the body of the central committee to which we belong and the anti-democratic procedures prove that today's SYRIZA-PA is absolutely contrary to the founding charter approved in 2022.”
The letter contains all their names. Earlier in the day, party member Olympia Teligioridou resigned from the political secretariat and central committee in a statement released by Kasselakis' office. She also referred to the expulsion procedures at the congress, where, in her words, “the basic conditions and rules of the work of SYRIZA-PA were not respected.”
After the resignation of 4 deputies on Monday morning, after stormy congress over the weekend, SYRIZA-PA now has the same number of seats in parliament with the socialist PASOK-KINAL. Both parties have 31 seats, but SYRIZA-PA is still considered the main opposition party because it won more votes in the last elections.
If another SYRIZA MP resigns, PASOK will become the main opposition. This fact serves as a “threat” for those who do not dare to take such action even before the ousted President Stefanos Kasselakis announces his new party with a name and program. This should happen before the end of the year.
Around November 20, SYRIZA-PA will receive a new leader through elections.
