Weather: Greece expects showers, thunderstorms and floods

The weather is expected to deteriorate sharply in the coming hours, and according to an update from the ΕΜΥ (Greek National Meteorological Service) emergency bulletin, the extreme weather will continue until at least Wednesday evening.

Western Greece will be the focus of meteorologists due to showers, thunderstorms and hail

Meteorologist Georgios Tsatrafillias in his post outlined areas where almost 100 tons of rain could fall per hectare, creating a risk of flooding. “Regions at risk with rainfall amounts up to 247 tons/hectare (therefore there is a risk of flash floods), until tomorrow evening: Zakynthos, Kefalonia-Ithaca, Lefkada, Achaia, Ilia, Etoloakarnania, Preveza,” he wrote on Facebook.

Severe weather conditions have been observed this morning (12/11) and ΕΜΥ previously updated its emergency bulletin. Besides, according to forecast Clearhos Marousakis, the path of bad weather that will affect the country with rain and thunderstorms until Monday is changing.

The phenomena will reach the Ionian Islands in the coming hours, and heavy rain and thunderstorms are expected in Kefalonia, Zakynthos and Ithaca over the next six to nine hours.

The latest weather forecast indicates a change in the path of the severe weather system. This means, according to Mr. Marousakis, that “In addition to the western maritime coastal areas, it seems that the maritime coastal areas in the south will also be affected, such as the southern maritime coastal areas of the Peloponnese with an extension towards the Myrton Sea – Cyclades.”

Based on what we know so far, the current severe weather in the west of the country will end on Wednesday. However, at this time a new cyclone will arrive, which will bring intense weather events throughout Greece and Attica. It will arrive in Greece on Friday and will affect the eastern and southern parts of the country, where it will bring cold weather with a further drop in temperature.

On Sunday, the cyclone's center will move east and south, meaning almost no region will be without rain by the end of the week, Mr Marousakis said.
