For the first time since the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the administration of US President Joe Biden will allow American military contractors to locate in Ukraine.
It is reported that the ban on sending American military contractors to Ukraine has been lifted Reuters and CNN, citing an anonymous source. They will be engaged in the maintenance and repair of equipment provided by the Armed Forces of Ukraine in Ukraine.
The White House made the decision in early November, before the US presidential elections. It will allow the Pentagon to award contracts to American companies to operate in Ukraine for the first time since Russia's full-scale invasion in 2022.
The presidential administration hopes that this will speed up the maintenance and repair of weapons systems used by the Ukrainian military. CNN clarifiesthat the weapons systems that will be maintained by US contractors include F-16 fighter jets and Patriot air defense systems.
Regarding the number of American contractors in Ukraine: the channel’s interlocutors claim that there will be from several dozen to several hundred. For security reasons, they will be in regions that are located further from the contact line.
Until now, due to a reluctance to put US citizens in Ukraine at risk, US contractors have not been able to visit the warring country. Damaged equipment had to be transported to neighboring Poland or Romania.
There was talk of lifting the ban on the work of American Pentagon contractors in Ukraine back in the summer of 2024, but then this idea was abandoned.
