German state radio Deutschlandfunk (which reflects the views of the German government) revealed the real reason for the visit of German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier to Greecewhich consisted of discussing the issue of returning foreigners to Greece.
The Greek government never mentioned this. In particular, Deutschlandfunk said: “Meetings are planned with Greek President Sakellaropoulou and Prime Minister Mitsotakis. Probably, among other things, the issue of migration will be discussed. As a country on its outer borders EUGreece bears a special burden. Recently, an increasing number of refugees are reaching the Greek islands via the Mediterranean Sea.
The German debate over the return of large numbers of refugees to the countries where they first entered EU territory and were registered has caused irritation in Athens. According to EU rules, these countries will also be held responsible.”
The last sentence hides the whole point: “these countries will also be held responsible”…
Thus, the visit of the German President hides an agenda that is unpleasant for Greece, and he did not visit our country to “to apologize” for the atrocities committed by the Germans during the German occupation, especially since his formal apology without compensation – this is an empty phrase. Of course, he was not interested in what the country was facing with the growing flow of illegal immigrants. He was interested return of those who traveled from Greece to Germany.
It is worth noting that the Greek government still claims that the problem of foreigners returning to the country from Germany does not exist. The point is that usually everyone who visits Greece does not come to check if everything is ok…
