The traditional food of the average Greek, souvlaki, has long been turned into a luxury item. Moreover, in the near future it is expected that their price will increase even more, so that for three pitagiro* you will have to pay almost 15 euros, which is exactly half the daily salary.
Souvlaki will become even more expensive
According to Mega, the cost of raw materials has increased sharply, so it is expected that the final product, i.e. souvlakiwill become even more expensive. According to the TV channel's estimates, the price in many souvlach** shops has already risen to 4 euros, and judging by forecasts, in other places the price of 4.20 euros will be considered the norm.
“All raw materials went up in price, tomatoes, pies, meat went up by 1 euro per kilo, so we raised it by 20 cents. From 3.70 we made 3.90, but we try not to exceed 4 euros,” – says Spyridon Bayraktaris, owner of the souvlatch shop.
“They say that raw material prices will rise significantly. If they grow, we will be forced to raise prices, we will not be able to absorb them anymore,” said, in turn, Andreas Andrianakis, vice-president of the Attica souvlach union. He clarified that the era when souvlaki was considered cheap for most Greek families is gone forever.
“The cost of one souvlaki now ranges from 3.40 to 3.90. On average 3.70, but can be found for 4 – 4.20 euros. For a family of 4 people, souvlaki will cost 35-40 euros. We are trying to keep prices down; according to the previous markups, they should already be between 4.20 and 4.50 euros.”
