Seismologists' opinion on yesterday's earthquake in Halkidiki (video)

On Sunday, November 3, Halkidiki was shaken by an earthquake measuring 5.2 on the Richter scale. Tremors were also felt in Thessaloniki.

Seismologists, professor of geophysics at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki Kostas Papazachos and Gerasimos Papadopoulos expressed their opinion about earthquake.

In particular, Mr. Papazachos, in a conversation with the Athens News Agency, stated that “this is an area with low seismicity according to observations, since there are seismographs dating back to the 20th century: there are no historical descriptions of strong earthquakes in this area, as well as historical descriptions of disasters.” The professor noted:

“This is not an earthquake that should be of great concern, it is in an area of low seismicity. Since this is a marine area, we don't have a good picture of faults etc. and rely solely on seismological data. And these data indicate low seismicity in the area without strong earthquakes.”

However, he explained:

“We will have a fairly significant sequence of aftershocks that require attention, which means that the residents of Nea Playa in the area of Sani, Siviri, Kassandra in general will be “shocked” for some time, will feel several aftershocks. There have already been many aftershocks. We will be monitoring this event over the coming days, but given the history of the region, this sequence of aftershocks should not be considered particularly alarming, but appears to be a normal sequence that has a strong chance of ending smoothly over the next few days. Of course, there will be many aftershocks.”

Gerasimos Papadopoulos, in a post on social networks, states that it is too early to say whether this was the main earthquake or whether others will follow. In particular, he wrote:

“An earthquake of magnitude 5.2 near Nea Moudania on the Kassandra peninsula in Halkidiki. Felt in Halkidiki and Thessaloniki. It was followed by 2-3 smaller ones. Is it too early to talk about a strong earthquake. We will know about it tomorrow, having received more data However, this area does not have a particularly high seismic potential. But this is not a 100 percent guarantee.”
