Animal rights activists demand a ban on breeding bulldog cats in Germany due to their serious health problems.
The bulldog breed of dog appeared in England several centuries ago. Due to their anatomy, these dogs often suffer from difficulty breathing, snoring, colds, sensitivity to overheating, fatigue and shortness of breath.
Now breeders have started breeding cats with similar characteristicsnamed bullycat, or “bull cat”. These animals resemble hairless sphinxes, but have short legs and wrinkled skin. The breed has become popular in the UK, with many adopting them to create content on social media. However “bully cats”like bulldogs, face serious health problems: they are limited in movement due to the lack of whiskers and short limbs, suffer from chronic skin infections, and are susceptible to injuries and burns. Their life expectancy is significantly shorter than that of ordinary cats.
“We have already seen extreme methods of dog breeding. Now it seems people have started exploiting cats in the same way for likes on social media. Bull cats are a disaster from an animal welfare perspective. This type of breeding is cruel.” – said representatives of the British animal protection organization Naturewatch Foundation.
The German Animal Welfare Union supported its British colleagues and believes that “bull cats» should be banned in Germany under Section 11b of the Animal Welfare Act. This law states that the country is not allowed “torture breeding” (Qualzucht), in which animals experience significant suffering.
