During incidents between police and firefighters on the evening of October 31, fourteen people were injured and four were arrested.
Clashes took place inside and outside the building of the Ministry of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection, with police using chemical agents. According to police, 12 of the injured are police officers. President of the Panhellenic Association of Contract Firefighters (ΠΑΣΣΥΠ) Alexis Psaropoulos said two firefighters were injured and taken to hospitals.
Four arrests were made in ΓΑΔΑ. The police used chemicals and pushed back the protesters with fire shields, writes newsbeast.gr. The police stopped the movement of vehicles in both streams of Kifissia, but after 22:00 in the evening traffic was restored.
The main demand of firefighters for the leadership of the ministry is to hire them on a permanent basis (“οι καταστροφές δεν είναι εποχικές”) to fill some of the 4,000 vacancies available in the fire department. They ask for a meeting with the minister.
Today, Friday, November 1, at 10 a.m., seasonal firefighters organize a rally in front of parliamentrequiring consistency. PASOK President Nikos Androulakis will meet with them.
The Hellenic Police Headquarters said in a statement regarding yesterday's incidents:
“After the completion of the meeting of the delegation with representatives of the ministry, in the evening hours people remained inside the building, while they were given time to leave after communicating with the competent prosecutor. The persons did not leave the territory, caused damage and attacked, throwing objects at the police officers, as a result of which The police officer was injured and was taken to hospital for first aid.”
Earlier, a seasonal firefighter climbed onto the roof and threatened to kill himself if police intervened.
