Former Golden Dawn MP Ilias Kasidiaris remains in prison after the Lamia Magistrate Council rejected his request to be released from custody.
The Plenary Council referred to the fact that Ilias Kasidiaris is also a defendant in the Spartans case, the hearing of which has been postponed today to November 22.
It is no secret that the imprisonment of Ilias Kasidiaris and all members of the Golden Dawn party was the result of political persecution, and in fact they are political prisoners.
An entire party and its entire parliamentary group are accused of murdering one person, Pavlos Fisas. At the same time the only person who should remain in prison is the man who killed Fisas, Giorgos Roupakias.
The government is making a political bet that Ilias Kasidiaris will not be “politically active” even indirectly, since in order to become politically active immediately, he must be acquitted before upcoming elections. The next national elections will likely take place in the spring of 2025.
In addition, they prefer a 7-9% increase in Velopoulos's party to a 10+% increase in Kasidiaris's popularity. Let us remind you that Ilias Kasidiaris was sentenced to 13 years in prison. In his new statement to the court, he claims he has served his entire sentence and is eligible for parole. However, members of the judicial council rejected Mr. Kasidiaris' new petition in accordance with the prosecutor's proposal.
According to the lawyer of former Golden Dawn MP Vaso Pantazi, her client has served his prison term“and the latest rejection of his petition relates only to the case of the Spartans.” According to the lawyer, Elias Kasidiaris remains “in a kind of hostage situation due to misdemeanor in a minor matter.”
