Study: Every second Muslim in Europe faces discrimination and racism

European countries have seen a surge in cases of discrimination against Muslims, the Agency reports. EU on Fundamental Rights (FRA).

Sirpa Rautio, head of FRA, comments to AFP:

“We are seeing an alarming increase in racism and discrimination against Muslims in Europe.”

Now this is every second, whereas in 2016 their share was 39%. The situation in the Middle East, she believes, is intensifying anti-Muslim rhetoric. Hatred against Muslims had been growing even before the Hamas attack on Israel, but the incident only made the situation worse.

The European Agency conducted a study covering 13 countries during the period 2021-2022. 9,600 people took part in the survey. According to its results, respondents faced the greatest discrimination in Germany, Austria and Finland. Muslims are discriminated against in the labor market, housing, education and health care.

The FRA report also demonstrated that, in addition to religion, people are discriminated against on the basis of skin color, ethnicity, and immigrant origin.
