Construction: the number of new permits increased by more than 20%

In the first seven months of 2024, Greece is experiencing positive dynamics in the construction industry. Private construction activity is beginning to recover, as evidenced by a significant increase in building permits issued.

According to the data of Ελληνικής Στατιστικής Αρχής (ΕΛΣΤΑΤ), in July 2024, 2,792 building permits were issued in the country, corresponding to 652,173 square meters of area and 2,917,048 cubic meters of volume. This represents an increase of 15.2% in number of permits, 6.5% in area and a decrease of 6.3% in volume compared to July 2023.

Private and public construction activities

In July 2024, 2,759 private building permits were issued, representing 643,677 square meters of area and 2,878,415 cubic meters of volume. It also shows a 14.9% increase in permits, a 10.1% increase in area and a 2.9% decrease in volume compared to the same month last year.

Regarding government construction activities, 33 permits were issued in July 2024, corresponding to 8,496 square meters of area and 38,633 cubic meters of volume. The share of state construction activity in the total construction volume was 1.3%.

Dynamics over the past 12 months

In the last 12 months, from August 2023 to July 2024, the total number of building permits issued was 30,141, corresponding to 6,954,868 square meters of area and 31,171,521 cubic meters of volume. Compared to the same period from August 2022 to July 2023, there is an increase of 12.8% in the number of permits, 15.3% in area and 13.5% in volume.

Private construction activity also saw growth over the same period: 13.0% in permits, 15.7% in area and 13.5% in volume. The share of government construction activity in this period was 2.6%.

Regional indicators

According to the data, the Ionian Islands saw an increase of 39.9% in the number of permits, Epirus by 27.7% and Crete by 27.2%.

Results for January – July 2024

Between January and July 2024, the total number of building permits increased by 20.5%, area by 20.6%, and volume by 12.4% compared to the same period in 2023. Private construction activity over the same period grew by 20.6% in permits, 21.4% in area and 12.2% in volume.
