Your pet sleeps blissfully on your lap, and you enjoy her trust and cozy warmth. But what to do if you urgently need to get up – how will forced awakening affect the cat’s condition?
Cat sleep phases
Experts explain writes BB.LV that humans and cats have approximately similar sleep cycles: the REM phase and the slow-wave sleep phase. You've probably noticed how your pet twitches its paws in its sleep, clicks its teeth and even makes strange sounds. This is how the cat enters the REM sleep phase: the muscles relax and send nerve signals to the paws, whiskers and tail during dreams.
Why do cats sleep a lot?
Cats spend approximately 2/3 of their lives sleeping. This means that they sleep 12-16 hours a day. Natural instincts are to blame for everything. Cats are hunters and tireless explorers. For such activities, they need a lot of energy to move: chasing toys, guarding unwary birds, jumping after flying butterflies and… catching nimble cockroaches. Therefore, during sleep, they restore expended strength and digest heavy food.
So to wake up or not to wake up? That's the question
First, look at how cats wake up their owners:
Now try to understand and remember: cats can't be woken up! The consequences of rough interruption of sleep can be very different and all unpleasant:
- This can provoke a defensive reaction: as a result, the pet may begin to act in your direction. aggressionscreaming loudly, hissing, scratching or even biting.
- Lethargy and fatigue – the cat will not be able to lead a normal lifestyle due to lack of energy.
- In addition to the immediate reaction, due to frequent awakenings the animal may develop chronic stress.
And if you really need to, how to wake up a cat
In case of emergency, you need to act as with a small child: the more gently and carefully you try to wake up the fluffy, the better.
Do not make any sudden movements or make excessively loud noises. Instead, try talking in a gradually increasing tone of voice, quietly rustling something over your pet's ear, or gently stroking his paws, behind the ears.
As soon as the cat starts to move and opens his eyes, do not rush to move him immediately: let him fully come to his senses and understand what is happening. Keep stroking him and increasing the noise.
