Owners whose cars are not insured or have not passed inspection will receive a fine of 250 to 1,000 euros by the end of the month.
If they do not hurry to insure and undergo MOT in January, they face doubling of fines, removal of license plates and registrations until they bring their vehicles into compliance with current legislation.
The General Secretariat for Information Systems and Digital Management these days begins cross-checks to identify violators as part of a semi-annual audit and will immediately “distribute” the prescribed fines. It is estimated that around 500,000 vehicles are currently being driven without insurance, while the number of vehicles that have failed an MOT is unknown (until crossing). Violators will be asked to pay:
- From €250 to €1,000 if the vehicle is uninsured. A fine of 1,000 euros is provided for city buses and minibuses, 500 euros for passenger and other vehicles of all types and 250 euros for two-wheelers.
- If a vehicle is found to be in arrears on road tax, it will have to pay double the amount of tax as well as annual fees.
- A fine of 400 euros if the vehicle fails a periodic inspection at a technical inspection center (MOT).
In case of repeated violation, the fines are doubled, and the registration and state license plates of the vehicle are also confiscated. They will only be refunded upon presentation of an appropriate insurance policy, a valid MOT certificate or certificate of non-payment of registration fee, as applicable, and proof of payment of the fine.
Within three months of notification of a fine, the law provides that if the electronic cross-check reveals a violation, a second electronic cross-check must be carried out. If this inspection reveals that the vehicle registration holder (the owner or owner of the vehicle) is not in compliance, then the vehicle registration and government license plates of the vehicle must be seized.
The act of imposing an administrative penalty on the owner of the registration permit is sent to the competent police authority at the place of residence for further actions (removing the registration data of the vehicle and delivering them to the Department of Transport and Communications of the region that issued the relevant act).
