Thomas Hoover was hospitalized in October 2021 due to a drug overdose. Doctors determined that he was brain dead and began preparing him for organ removal by sedating him. However, a few seconds before the procedure, Hoover regained consciousness.
Nurse Natasha Miller describes the moment:
“He started moving and twitching. When we approached him, we saw that he was crying.”
Doctors immediately stopped the operation, but this angered a representative from the Kentucky Donor Affiliates (KODA), who insisted that the procedure continue.
“He told my boss that we needed to find another doctor to complete the operation.”says Miller.
Now KODA representatives deny that their employee gave instructions to doctors to remove organs from a living person.
Thomas Hoover survived the operation, but now suffers from speech and walking problems. It is unclear whether doctors will be held accountable for declaring him brain dead.
