At least 94 people have been burned alive in northern Nigeria after a tanker truck exploded during a road accident.
According to CNN, they were local residents who approached the tanker truck to retrieve fuel from the overturned tanker truck. Local sources say the death toll is expected to rise.
The tragic incident occurred late Tuesday evening in the village of Maggia. “The driver lost control of the tank, causing it to overturn and spill fuel into a drainage ditch. Residents went to get free fuel, and at that moment an explosion occurred“said a local police spokesman. At least 50 people were seriously injured in the explosion, the same official said.
On September 9, 2024, a similar incident occurred in Nigeria. As a result of a collision between a fuel tanker and a truck carrying passengers and cattle, 48 people died. According to the BBC, the Niger State Emergency Management Agency said an explosion occurred after the collision. Emergency services were sent to the scene and confirmed the number of deaths.
