General Greek Workers' Confederation (ΓΣΕΕ) joins trade unions around the world in marking today International Decent Work Daythe union said in a statement.
“For the confederation, dignity in the workplace is a priority and decent and safe working conditions for all are at the forefront of its struggle. Decent work means wages that provide a decent life for workers, respect for work-life balance, elimination of inequalities and discrimination, equal opportunities for all,” the statement said. GSEE and notes that for these reasons and with demands for, among other things, fair wages, collective bargaining for all, occupational safety and health, it has already decided to hold a 24-hour nationwide strike on November 20, 2024.”
According to the confederation, “Dignity at work means dignity in life.” Press release ΓΣΕΕ about the strike on November 20:
Combating inflation, rising rents and housing market prices, and restoring collective labor laws were the focus of today's GSEE plenary session. Given the fact that the government is not taking any significant steps to address these critical problems affecting private sector workers, but instead is implementing measures that are exacerbating their problems, the confederation has decided:
- hold a 24-hour general strike on Wednesday 20 November 2024.
- carry out an information campaign to be launched immediately in all regions of the country, with special emphasis on Athens and Thessaloniki, with the aim of mass and united participation in the 24-hour general strike.
The government is unable to implement policies that strengthen workers' purchasing power, which has fallen by 8% since 2019. Unfortunately, the policy of subsidies and travel tickets does not solve the problem. Urgent action is needed to combat oligopolistic market shaping and cartels, re-regulate labor relations and collective labor legislation, and implement social housing programs using the $1.5 billion reserve from the former Labor House. These measures meet the real needs of private sector workers, and we will fight to implement them.”
