An unknown work by Mozart was performed for the first time at the Leipzig Opera (video)

The score of a previously unknown work by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was discovered quite by accident in the collections of the city libraries of Leipzig, the press service of the municipal libraries reported.

Experts believe, Bild reports, that it was written in the 1760s, when Mozart was between 10 and 13 years old (the composer was born in 1756). This is the piece Serenate ex C from the collection of Carl Ferdinand Becker. It consists of seven miniature parts for a string trio – two violins and a cello.

The publication clarifies that the score found in the library is not the composer’s original manuscript, but a copy made around 1780. It is unknown who rewrote Mozart's work. The sheet music was found during work on compiling a new edition of the Köchel reference book, an archive of Mozart’s musical works. It was called Ganz kleine Nachtmusik (“Very Little Night Music”).

The musical work was first performed on September 21 at the Leipzig Opera. Listeners were invited to attend the concert for free. There were so many people who wanted to listen to the “unknown” Mozart that the queue stretched for 400 meters. Not everyone was lucky enough to get inside.

Mozart is one of the greatest and most famous composers. He is considered one of the most significant representatives of the Vienna Classical School. Mozart began writing music as a child and created more than 600 works, including 16 masses, 14 operas, and approximately 50 symphonies.
