12 countries, including China and Brazil, warned against using nuclear weapons against Ukraine

The Russian president threatens to use nuclear weapons in the event of massive attacks on Russian territory. Twelve countries have signed a joint warning against such threats.

Among them are Brazil, China, Algeria, Zambia, Kenya, Kazakhstan, Indonesia, Egypt, Colombia, South Africa, Turkey, Bolivia. Released on Friday evening, September 27 joint statementafter a ministerial meeting on Ukraine on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York, says:

“We call for an end to threats to use weapons of mass destruction, especially nuclear, chemical and biological weapons.”

Twelve countries expressed deep concern about the threat of escalation of the conflict in Ukraine:

“Civilian infrastructure, including nuclear power plants and other energy facilities, should not become the target of military operations.”

Earlier this week, Russian President Vladimir Putin statedthat Russia could use nuclear weapons in the event of massive air strikes on the country's territory. He warned that any attack on Russia carried out with the support of a nuclear state could be regarded as a joint aggression against the Russian Federation.

On September 25, Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky accused Moscow of preparing an attack on Ukrainian nuclear power plants. He criticized China and Brazil, which are offering themselves as mediators in resolving the war in Ukraine on conditions unacceptable to Kyiv. Zelensky said that forcing Ukraine to enter into a peace deal is tantamount to colonialism.

In the adopted joint declaration, twelve countries emphasized the importance of the peaceful resolution of all international conflicts: “We call for support for the parties to the conflict to conclude a comprehensive and lasting agreement through broad diplomacy and political means based on the UN Charter.”
