In a classroom at the 3rd Gymnasium in Thessaloniki, plaster fell from the ceiling during a lesson.
It was only by a lucky chance that there were no casualties or victims – there were no students at the desks that stood in that place, it is said in a complaint filed by the Federation of Parents and Guardians of the Central Macedonia Region.
According to members of the federation, the Thessaloniki municipality recently decided to move the Intercultural High School (Διαπολιτισμικού Λυκείου) there, “even though parents and teachers reacted due to infrastructure problems.” In August last year, teams hired by the municipality began dividing the school premises with plasterboard, and were also told of problems both in the building and in the yard. The federation calls for a thorough inspection of all school buildings at all levels:
- static adequacy;
- seismic resistance;
- availability of emergency exits;
- fire and electrical safety.
The Federation also calls for the construction of new, safe and modern school buildings and the modernization of school infrastructure to meet the growing educational needs of the 21st century.
