The investigation into the three alleged perpetrators of the attacks is still ongoing. It was announced this summer that The accused are ready to make a deal with the investigationto avoid the death penalty. However, within days, the deal was effectively cancelled by the US Secretary of Defense, who removed the powers of the military investigator who worked with the accused, since this would have excluded the death penalty from the list of possible punishments.
According to the investigation, Walid Sheikh Mohammed and his two accomplices were ready to admit their guilt on all counts, including the murder of 2,976 people. In exchange, they would receive their lives. It was Khalid Sheikh Mohammed who proposed this form of organizing a terrorist attack to Osama bin Laden, and then personally selected and instructed the suicide bombers. All these years, the accused remained in the American prison Guantanamo. The organizer of the terrorist attacks, the leader of Al-Qaeda Osama bin Laden, was killed by American special forces in 2011.
