The Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs does not plan to introduce direct flights to Northern Cyprus.
This was stated by Yuri Pilipson, head of the fourth European department of the Russian Foreign Ministry, quotes RIA Novosti following the interview with him:
“As is known, only Turkey operates air traffic to the north of Cyprus. In this sense, the situation has not changed for a long time, as has our position on Cypriot affairs.”
Pilipson emphasized that the Russian Federation, as a member of the UN Security Council, has been committed throughout its existence to Security Council resolutions, including 541 and 550, and the Chicago Convention on International Air Traffic, concluded in 1944:
“We see no alternative to relying on international law.”
Earlier, Ersin Tatar, the head of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (not recognized by any country except Turkey), reported that the country's leadership is negotiating with Russia on the creation of a consulate and direct flights, and believes that the Russian Federation will form its own diplomatic space there.
