It is unlikely that anyone who is not involved in this profession can really imagine how difficult it is to fight a fire in 40-degree heat. Only a sip of fresh water helps to take a break from this hell for a couple of seconds and come to your senses.
But this opportunity deprived Greek firefighters – For two days they were not supplied with any water or food. Fortunately, there are caring people who prepare food and deliver it along with water to the firefighters on bicycles. And where is our government looking? The complaint from the Attica firefighters says:
“It's a disgrace to the state apparatus that residents cook food and ride bicycles to distribute food to firefighters.”
Representatives of the Ministry of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection and the Fire Brigade Headquarters complain that they have not received drinking water and food for the second day. A post by the Seasonal Firefighters Facebook group says:
“Countless complaints that they have not been given a single bottle of water since yesterday, and the one they gave yesterday was so hot that you couldn't even drink it. It is shameful for the state apparatus that residents cook food and ride bicycles to distribute food to the firefighters. To those of you who thought of us: we thank you from the bottom of our hearts.”
The complaint was republished on social media by the head of the SYRIZA-Progressive Alliance parliamentary group, Socrates Famellos, who noted that “in the context of the extraordinary disaster in Attica, this complaint by the firefighters takes priority.” He also added:
“Since yesterday we have had information about the lack of water for firefighters and volunteers. We, as SYRIZA-PS, have done everything we could, calling for the collection of essential supplies. Now the unacceptable decisions and shortcomings of the government exceed all limits! A response is required from Mitsotakis and Kikilia, as well as from the relevant management. Not only did they leave the fire department without personnel, not only did they leave contract firefighters without work in the winter, today even basic shortcomings have been revealed.”
The head of the SYRIZA-PS parliamentary group noted: “Before I published this, I was informed by telephone. Do not try to dispute this.”
