"Gold rush" in Britain and beyond

A small coin from the 20th century, the 1933 penny, can fetch between £140,000 and £170,000.

A collector of ancient coins told about this. According to the numismatist, not all such coins have been found yet, so there is a chance. So the British began an active search for the nondescript coin, visiting elderly relatives and rummaging through their home “piggy banks”.

There are only seven such coins in the world, one of which was sold at auction in 2016. What is its special feature? This was reported on the Mirror portal. Journalists drew attention to a video on TikTok published by a user with the nickname Coin Collecting Wizard. He is interested in ancient coins and has 172 thousand fans and almost 1 million likes.

The user shared a fragment of an interview with a representative of the auction house Baldwin&son. In the recording, you can hear that A 10p coin issued in 1933 can fetch a large sum. The publication of this story was titled “The Holy Grail 1933 Before the Decimal Penny”.

The antiques expert explained that he has a private coin collection, but the pennies he is talking about are on loan. He shows his collection to visitors and, thanks to the loaned exhibit, it is very popular. In 2016, an auction took place where a 1933 10 penny was sold for £140,000. The reason for the high price is the small number of coins, which “usually disappeared into safes and were never seen again.”

However, the author of the video emphasizes that none of them are worth as much as the one issued in 1933.

One person reported that he had once had such a coin, but later lost it. Others said that they kept almost a full jar, but they were not believed. In addition, they asked how many precious pennies had already been found: there is an answer – six out of seven.

Earlier, the TikTok user who shared the scarce 1933 penny has revealed other coins that can fetch hundreds of thousands of pounds. In a video about the issue, he suggests searching through caches a 2 pence coin issued in 1983. According to him, the uniqueness of this coin is that the Royal Mint changed the inscription, and this significantly increased its price.
