Trump's Ukraine peace plan unveiled by Johnson

Former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has unveiled a peace plan that could “end the war on the right terms for Ukraine and the West.”

Johnson published his main theses in author's column for the Daily Mail, stating:

“I believe Trump can end it – on the right terms for Ukraine and the West. I emphasize that I cannot be sure what he will do if elected. But this is what he can do.”

Johnson believes that The first step is to strengthen Western aid and strengthen Ukraine. US presidential candidate Donald Trump could simply do what comes naturally to him:

  1. stop bureaucratic red tape and delays;
  2. give the Ukrainians the necessary permits;
  3. then, when Putin is pushed back again, offer a deal.

Johnson stressed that Putin would have to retreat at least to the pre-2022 invasion lines. In order to avoid future conflicts and uncertainty, the rest of Ukraine must be recognized as a free country, capable of choosing its own destiny EU and NATOand absolutely desirable for the earliest possible accession.

The British politician stressed that The Ukrainians have more than a million people with weapons. They are already well accustomed to working with NATO equipment and are the most effective anti-Russian force in the world. When the war is over, there is no reason why Ukrainian troops cannot replace some of the 70,000 American troops still in Europe.

The former British prime minister said this would allow Trump to save money, bring American troops home and force Europeans to do more for their own defense, which is one of his key goals.

He also expressed the opinion that Russian leader Putin will be able to claim that the “special military operation” – i.e. the invasion – was a success and that he has denazified Ukraine. Special protections may be provided for Russian speakers:

“First of all, with Trump in the White House, there is a real prospect of some kind of global rapprochement with Russia, and with Putin, a return to the times when Russia was a respected partner of the G8 and even NATO. But there is only one way to achieve this result – through force. Washington under Trump will have to show that international borders must be respected, and that the Soviet empire cannot be restored by force.

This means supporting the Ukrainians to the end. If Trump were in the White House, I don’t think Putin would be so reckless and criminal as to invade Ukraine. Never forget that it was Trump, not Obama or Biden, who provided the Ukrainians with the Javelin anti-tank missiles that were crucial in the battle for Kyiv in 2022. Trump has a history of decisive military intervention on behalf of Ukrainian democracy.

If and when he returns to power later this year, Trump will have a huge chance not just to right his predecessor’s legacy but to lead the world forward. Donald Trump knows the risk: Ukraine’s defeat could have enormous long-term consequences for America and the world.

On the other hand, a Ukrainian victory – if used correctly – could pave the way, paradoxically, for a new and much better relationship with Russia. That would be a great victory for America and for the world.”

On July 16, Boris Johnson met with US presidential candidate Donald Trump, and they discussed Ukraine. The former prime minister has been actively supporting Ukraine since the start of Russia's full-scale invasion and has advocated providing it with all the necessary assistance. In particular, in April, he called on Western countries to abandon restrictions on the supply of weapons to Ukraine, which it needs to defeat Russia in a full-scale war.

How the war can be ended according to Johnson's vision, and what Trump might dobriefly:

  1. Access to the borders until 24.02.2022 (Crimea remains in the Russian Federation).
  2. Ukraine's accession to the EU and NATO.
  3. The Ukrainian army, instead of the American one (there are currently 70,000 US soldiers in the EU), is stationed at US bases in the EU to protect against Russia and other aggressors, which will significantly save the US money.
