The day before the vote that will decide whether to remain Ursula von der Leyen as Commission Chairthe European Union's top court has made a very important decision, condemning it for signing contracts for the supply of Covid-19 vaccines “are not transparent.”
From a political point of view, the blow to von der Leyen is very serious. If the vote to continue her presidency passes, those who voted for it will be held accountable.
In particular, the Supreme Court of the European Union ruled that the European Commission had failed to provide the public with ““enough wide access” to Covid-19 vaccine contracts, finding “violations in the justification for the correction of some documents.”
Ursula von der Leyen must secure the support of 361 MEPs on Thursday to retain her post as commission chief. According to Politico, the case was brought by a group of Green MEPs who filed request for access to vaccine supply contracts to understand 2021 deal between commission and Covid-19 vaccine makers.
The commission agreed to grant partial access to some contracts, saying that Some sections have been amended to protect commercial interests or to ensure confidentiality. For this reason, MEPs went to court.
Supreme Court EU ruled that the commission's decision to exclude parts of the agreements contained “violations” and decided that the commission “has not demonstrated that broader access to these provisions would actually undermine the commercial interests of these enterprises.”
Athens News It was previously reported that the initiative group of MEPs back in 2021 became interested the issue of transparency in the procurement of coronavirus vaccines for a total of several billion euros. MEPs saw signs of a corruption and forwarded the request to prosecutor's office.
