BILD: Orban urges EU to renew relations with Russia

BILD has obtained a letter written by Viktor Orbán, as Prime Minister of the country holding the presidency of the Council EU.

It is addressed to the head of the European Council, Charles Michel. The Hungarian prime minister gave him “a brief assessment of the recent talks with the leaders of Ukraine, Russia, China, Turkey and President Donald Trump, as well as some proposals for consideration.” The letter, 1.5 A4 pages long, consists of ten points. “Overall, it can be seen that the intensity of the military conflict will increase radically in the near future,” Orban writes. He calls for:

  • Conduct negotiations with China on a “peace conference” on Ukraine.
  • Resume diplomatic relations with Russia.
  • Conduct a “political offensive” against the countries of the Global South, in whose eyes the EU has “lost respect for our position on the war in Ukraine.”

Then he criticizes Joe Biden: “The current president is making great efforts to stay in the race. He is obviously incapable of changing the current US policy that promotes war, so he cannot be expected to initiate a new course.” According to Orban, Donald Trump can do this.

“I can <..> say with confidence that after winning the election, he will not wait for the inauguration, but will immediately be ready to act as a peace negotiator. He has detailed and well-founded plans for this. <..> I am more than convinced that if President Trump wins, the financial burden between the US and the EU, when it comes to financial support for Ukraine, will change significantly to the detriment of the EU.”
