Orban's Far-Right Alliance Becomes Third Force in European Parliament (Video)

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban's nationalist group Patriots for Europe has been officially approved in the European Parliament.

It has 84 MEPs, making it the third largest alliance in the EP. The leader of the National Rally, Jordan Bardella, has been appointed chairman.

Launched last week, the far-right alliance succeeded the previous far-right group in the European Parliament, Identity and Democracy (ID), which has now been dissolved. The grouping has expanded rapidly, with many parties expressing interest in joining in recent days and yesterday morning the French National Rally (RN) and Italy's League, two key ID parties, joining.

The largest delegation in the Patriots will be Marine Le Pen's RN, with thirty MEPs. Next in size are Orban's Fidesz with ten MEPs, Matteo Salvini's Lega with eight and Andrej Babiš's ANO with seven. Other national delegations include Austria's Freedom Party (FPÖ), Spain's far-right Vox and the Dutch nationalist PVV, each representing six MEPs. writes Euronews.

The alliance also includes three lawmakers from Belgium's Flemish nationalist party Vlaams Belang, two from Portugal's Chega! and one from the Danish People's Party, for a total of 84 MEPs. While Patriots for Europe is only slightly larger than ID, which had 73 MEPs when it was created in 2019, the new group's presence in parliament is more noticeable due to the reduction in the total number of MEPs from 751 to 720.

With 84 MEPs, the Patriots beat the European Conservatives and Reformists (ECR), which has 78 MEPs, and the liberal Renew Europe, which has 76 members, achieving Orban's original goal of becoming the third force in the European Parliament.
