Meteorologist Georgios Tsatrafilias warns of a “marathon of heat” in a post on his personal Facebook account.
The forecaster of the Alpha channel of the weather forecast program Weather2Go.gr mentions that “The heat wave that theoretically starts today will bother us until at least July 25. In fact, it provides a table of the highest temperatures expected in the coming days in Athens, Piraeus, Thessaloniki, Patras, Larissa and Heraklion on Crete.
Athens is expected to reach +40°C on Sunday, while Heraklion, Crete, is expected to reach +41°C on the same day. However, according to a table published by Mr. Tsatrafillias in On most days, temperatures will approach the limits of abnormal heat”.
The message is titled: “Weather: very high level of heat load in the country”Very high temperatures, like those that have hit our country since the beginning of the week, pose a significant threat to human health due to the thermal stress exerted on the human body.
Meteo.gr reports: “The degree and danger of this load depends, in addition to temperature, on humidity, wind and external radiation, as well as on personal parameters (gender, age, weight, height, level of clothing and physical activity). Taking into account all relevant factors, the biometeorological warning system HEAT-ALARM warns in each regional unit of the country about the days when heat stress can lead to serious health problems”.
According to the latest available estimates of the system HEAT ALARMincreased risk due to heat stress is expected on Wednesday, July 10 in northern, central and western mainland and island Greece, as well as the islands of the eastern Aegean. As shown in the following map, the regions that will be hardest hit, reaching the extreme risk level, are Kavala, Chalkidiki, Kilkis, Pella, Imathia, Pieria, Thesprotia, Corfu, Elis, Messenia, Samos, Ikaria and Kalymnos.
On Thursday Unseasonably warm weather conditions are expected to continue both during the day and at night on Friday, July 11th and 12th.resulting in The risk of heat stress will remain at very high or extreme levels.
It is noted that the predominance strong northerly winds over the Aegean Sea and the eastern continental parts of the countryis expected to maintain the risk of heat stress at low relative levels (moderate to high) for three days on 10-12 July over 12 areas including East Attica, Cyclades and Crete.
Finally, it is important to emphasize that in In biometeorologically stressed areas, the risk is even higher for older people (65+), especially older womenas well as for people working outdoors. The implementation of protective measures (e.g. no active recreation between 10:00 and 16:00), especially for these groups of the population, is considered absolutely necessary for protection of human health.
