4.3 Richter earthquake near Kythnos

A magnitude 4.3 earthquake occurred at 11:53 a.m. near Kythnos and was felt in Attica.

The earthquake had a focal depth of 14.4 km and occurred approximately 17 km northeast of the island of Kythnos.

Initially, the Institute of Geodynamics reported that the earthquake was about 4.5 on the Richter scale and it occurred east of Naxos, but the data was later clarified. However, the first measurements showed the magnitude of the earthquake to be 4.8 on the Richter scale.

The European Mediterranean Seismological Center, for its part, initially gave the earthquake a magnitude of 4.4 Richter, and has now also given a figure of 4.3 Richter.

Seismologist Gerasimos Papadopoulos called the 4.3 magnitude quake off Kythnos at 11:53 a.m. a “little surprise.” According to what he wrote in his Facebook post, this was a surprise since the area has very low seismicity.
