At the Brussels summit, EU leaders accepted the European Commission’s recommendation to open accession negotiations with Ukraine and Moldova, European Council President Charles Michel announced on Twitter (X):
“The European Council has decided to begin negotiations on accession to EU with Ukraine and Moldova.”
The opening of negotiations, as is known, requires the consent of all EU leaders, including Hungary, which until recently declared resistance to such a decision. How writes “European Truth”, on Thursday morning, key leaders tried to convince Orban of the need to support Ukraine. After that, he said that he was not against Ukraine joining the EU, but “saw no reason” for negotiations. It remains a mystery how Orban was persuaded to lift the blockade.
Leaders’ decision EU means that the EC begins to prepare the technical aspects of membership negotiations with Ukraine (negotiating framework) without further delay. It could be approved at the next EU summit in the spring of 2024 if it is recognized that Ukraine has fulfilled all previous criteria of the European Commission.
President Vladimir Zelensky called the summit’s decision to begin negotiations a victory for Ukraine, a victory for all of Europe. According to him, this victory is motivating, inspiring and strengthening.
