Greece: on the island of Halki no longer pay for electricity (video)

Eco-socialism can be called the situation on the small island of Halki in the Aegean Sea.

The “GR-eco Islands” project was tested here, and the result was more than spectacular: thanks to solar panels, households on Halki no longer pay for electricity, and businesses get discounts.

Halki is a small island in the Aegean Sea in the Dodecanese archipelago. Here, a national plan to turn the Greek islands into models of sustainable development and social economy began to be implemented, and the energy society ChalkiON was born.

French and Greek investors have invested in several promising projects, one of them is a photovoltaic plant that produces 1.8 gigawatts of electricity annually. Akuo representative Vassilis Zafiropoulos says:

“The solar park saved 2,576 tons of CO2 emissions, equivalent to 617 conventional cars. Green energy production cost 260,000 euros less, which is enough to cover the costs of more than 200 families living on the island.”

Residents of Halka receive fantastic bills: 0 euros. Significantly reduced the cost of electricity for small businesses. Port shop owner Lambros Markakis says:

“Recently, I received a bill for 1,500 euros. I felt the difference, because before I paid 8,000 a year.”

The Eco-Island initiative also aims to develop “green” mobility, as well as 5G technology. The quality of life on Halki has improved significantly thanks to telemedicine and the ability to study remotely. In the plans of the authorities – the intention to scale the concept. Halki Mayor Evangelos Fragakakis says:

“Hulki serves as an example for the whole country. With money EU the government in Athens would do the same in other Greek territories. If memory serves me right, it’s about a billion euros.”

Soon, a large delegation from South Korea is expected to arrive on the island, wishing to get acquainted with the program and use the experience of the islanders.
