Evros: Turkish military urged migrants to return to Turkey

Most of the migrants who were on nameless islands on the Evros River were taken out with the assistance of the Turkish authorities, as announced by the Minister for the Protection of Citizens, Charalambos Lalousis.

According to a NGO report, about 330 illegal migrants passed through the islet. “In recent days, we have taken many measures. We will no longer act like in 2020,” Lalousis said.

On Tuesday evening, Acting Foreign Minister Vassilis Kaskarelis had a telephone conversation with the new Turkish Foreign Minister, Hakan Fidan, during which the issue of illegal migration was raised.

Hakan Fidan reportedly expressed Turkey’s intention to take initiatives to control migration flows to Greece. According to the same information, after a private conversation between the two ministers, the Turkish side sent a note outlining the measures it intends to take on this issue.

Media sources said that after a telephone conversation between Kaskarelis and Fidan, Greek forces discovered that boats had approached the islet and the Turkish military invited illegal migrants to board. Some of them went on board, but the exact number is not known.

Government sources interpret the initiative of the Turkish authorities as an expression of good will. In any case, the Greek authorities remain vigilant to deal with any incident, the same sources added.
