Greece again rescues migrants – 91 people transported from an islet on the river Evros

91 migrants, including 32 men, 25 women and 34 children, were stranded on a river island on the border with Turkey and were rescued by the Greek authorities.

How informs Greek publication Ekathimerini, the migrants have been there since Friday, non-governmental organizations sent emails to the Greek authorities warning of their presence. Part of this island is Greek, and part is Turkish. By Sunday, the migrants had crossed over to the Greek side and a rescue operation began, with the Red Cross present. Several migrants told police they were from Syria. The Greek government said in a statement:

“Recently, there has been a low water level in the river, which contributes to the illegal crossing of migrants who use the islets located both on Greek and Turkish territory … The Greek government appealed to the Turkish, who was sworn in (on Saturday), with a request to coordinate the actions of border services and prevent illegal crossings.

Evros is a key border crossing point with Greece for people who are looking for a better life in the European Union. Greece has built a high fence along much of the border to prevent migrants from entering and plans to expand it further. And recently this building attracted attention… tourists.

Travel agents in Athens, as well as offices organizing excursions in the northeast of Greece, have informed their partners in the Evros region that there is an ever-increasing interest from Greeks and foreigners who intend to come to the prefecture in groups to visit the fence in the Thera area. Now they see the fence in Evros as… a landmark they would like to see in person, according to a local news site. evros-news.gr in an exclusive report. Tourism professionals find no problem with the toolkit of anti-immigration policy and tourists visiting the fence with a total length of more than 60 km along the Greek-Turkish border.
