Bulgaria destroys 1.4 million doses of Pfizer Covid-19 vaccine

Bulgaria continues to destroy 1.4 million doses of the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine, Acting Minister of Health Asen Medzhidiev said.

Majidiev compared today’s infection caused by Covid-19 with the usual flu. The minister called it a success for the government that the European Commission negotiated on his behalf to buy fewer doses from Pfizer. “Thus the obligation of the state to receive vaccines, which it must destroy, is removed. We have saved 188 million leva, which would have been paid now,” he said. This money will be used to build a children’s hospital, as well as a hotel and a rehabilitation center..

The deal, which the European Commission has renegotiated with Pfizer, gives Bulgaria an opportunity order new doses when she needs them and pay for them when they arrive. According to Medzhidiyev, if the cost of visiting doctors increases, then they should be borne by the state, not the patient. The minister also said that the first ambulance helicopters would arrive in Bulgaria ahead of schedule.

“The helicopter leasing process has been completed, and it was secured, among other things, by a contract with an Italian company. The first two leased helicopters will arrive in late June or early July. The first helicopter we bought will be delivered here in December, and Bulgaria will receive two more next year,” he said.
